The rhythmic sound of beating drums, a dazzling display of ceremonial Aztec dances by the Ballet Folklórico and the opening of an exhibit celebrating the descendants of an ancient and highly accomplished civilization kicked off the first day of FESTIBA (Festival of International Books and Arts) March 24 at The University of Texas-Pan American.

A photography exhibit celebrating the descendants of an ancient and highly accomplished civilization titled “Lost Cultures: The Aztecs” will open March 24 at The University of Texas-Pan American Visitors Center.

Documentary photographer Wesley Billingslea has used his skills to focus on raising awareness about a culture that has been forgotten and misunderstood through his striking collection of black and photo photographs and the personal stories of this indigenous people – the Mexihcahs. This collaborative effort, Billingslea explains, allows the Mexihcahs to voice their own truth about their history, culture and the present day human rights struggle they face to be recognized as important members of society.
